What are 3D 4D ultrasounds, why is everyone always talking about them, and why is Sneak-A-Peek Imaging the best place to go get a 3D 4D ultrasound?
As expectant mothers you are excited to see your baby at every stage, and every ultrasound is a moment to treasure.
With insurance companies restricting the number of ultrasounds allowed during a pregnancy, more parents have begun to utilize the 3D 4D ultrasound services at Sneak-A-Peek Imaging to sneak extra peeks of your baby.
With a 2D ultrasound, the ultrasound technician can view different layers of the baby, from the outer extremities to the internal organs. This technology is used when performing a 20 week diagnostic ultrasound. 2D ultrasounds are commonly used to determine the gender of the baby.
During a 3D/4D ultrasound, only the outside of the baby can be seen. A 3D ultrasound can help in diagnosing certain conditions that may not be visible with 2D technology.
3D ultrasounds are performed using the GE Voluson 730 the exact same machine as a 2D ultrasound. The difference is a 2D ultrasound visualizes the baby in planes and a 3D ultrasound looks at the surface of the baby. The term 4D means the element of motion has been added to a still 3D photo. 4D is also referred to as "3D Live".
Sneak-A-Peek Imaging performs 2D ultrasound Gender Checks at 18 weeks and 3D 4D ultrasounds are done between 25 and 35 weeks. Typically 27 to 28 weeks is usually considered the ideal time, because the baby does have some fat and still has plenty of room to move. After 35 weeks, the baby begins to get a little squished and may be facing the spine, which is the position for birth.
It is important to schedule your 3D 4D ultrasound between 25-35 weeks because you will enjoy the viewing experience more if your baby has room to move around. Often you can watch little hands and feet in motion, toes and fingers wiggling, and see your baby's face from all different angles.

2D ultrasounds are the traditional black & white ultrasounds that you have probably seen before. The pictures show the skeletal structure (outline) of the baby. You also get to see the baby moving in 2D! This is the type of ultrasound that was probably used for your diagnostic ultrasound. It is still the best technology for gathering measurements of the baby and ensuring that the baby is developing as expected.
